Suebi Unit Roster
Infantry Units
Gaizafulkan Frijato (Germanic Levy Spearmen) These farmers, ferriers, and stable boys are called to serve in times of crisis. Most have seen too many winters, or too few, but all will answer the call and take their place in the line of battle with a crude spear and a simple, wicker shield. |

Tencteriz Hundaratha (Suebi Light Spearmen) The best men are chosen from the whole body of young warriors and placed with the cavalry in front of the main battle line. The number of these is precisely fixed: a hundred are drawn from each district, and ‘The Hundred’ is the name they bear among their fellow-countrymen. Thus what was originally a mere number has come to be a title of distinction. |

Swebusku Speutanautoz (Suebi Proven Spearmen) These older and experienced warriors form the centre of any sizable army. They can form a Shield Wall, and are hardened and well-equipped, with light leather armor, good shields, and a stout spear as melee weapon. |

Hariz Skaduganganz (Harii Night Walkers) These Hariz Skaduganganz (those who go in shadows) have followed the amber trade routes into the west, where they now serve as auxiliaries or mercenaries for the Sweboz. They choose pitch-black nights, thick forests, or murky swamps for their battles and strike fear into the hearts of their enemies with the terrifying, shadow-like appearance of an army of the dead. |

Hattisku Gaizoz Maγiðīnan (Chatti Spearmen) These Chatti freemen are among the most common infantry in a Suebi warband. They wear their hair and beards long and shaggy, vowing not to cut it until they have proven themselves in battle. The bravest also wear an iron ring – which in their country is a great indignity – as a mark of servitude, until they release themselves by killing a man. |

Hattisku Gaizoz Dugunthiz (Chatti Veteran Spearmen) The coward who will not fight must stay unshorn. These Chatti veterans are proven men who have slain a man in battle. As such, they neatly trim their hair and beards, proudly showing their faces in the community. They are more disciplined than their younger, unproven counterparts. |

Hattisku Sloxonez (Chatti Clubmen) The Chatti wear their hair and beards long and shaggy, vowing not to cut it until they have proven themselves in battle. Some also wear an iron ring around their necks as a mark of servitude, until they release themselves by killing a man. They may look primitive, but clubs can cause blunt force trauma or concussion damage even through armor or a helmet, and they throw javelins before charging. |

Heruskoz Hildisvini (Cherusci Axemen) These Cherusci warriors are strong and battle-hardened. Their axes make them effective against any unit, even an armored one. They are also fast and agile, perfect for flanking manoeuvers, or as the main shock infantry, followed by other warriors. The name literally means battlepig, as they are the metaphoric equivalents of the wild boar. |

Tiwaz Drutiz (Champions of Tiwaz) These fierce fighters form a chosen elite in many Germanic tribes. They are entirely devoted to their god Tiwaz. They adorn themselves with sacred symbols to invoke his protection. Such warriors are a frightening sight to all but the most hardened veterans. |

Hariz Nokwlentoi (Harii Night Strikers) These Hariz Nokwlentoi (night strikers) have followed the amber trade routes into the west. They are masters of psychological warfare, using stealth, trickery, and terror to defeat otherwise superior opponents. And axes. Lots of axes. |

Swebusku Druthinaz (Noble Germanic Swordsmen) Druthinaz are warbands appointed to serve a powerful leader. These noble swordsmen are few in number, but are truly gifted and ferocious fighters. They use a shorter sword than the Celts, which is useful for slashing and thrusting. They throw one or two javelins before charging into enemy lines with a terrible roar – the dreaded barritus. |

Herunoudozez (Early Germanic Swordsmen) Armed with sturdy shields and swords, these men are the Germanic warrior elite. Professionals, they spend their time in the service of a chieftain or king, and fight for his glory and honour in battle. If necessary, it is expected that these men will give their lives for their leader. To leave a battlefield when their chief has fallen is the greatest dishonour for a Herunoudaz. |

Kuningaz Beryanoz (King’s Guard) These nobles are close bodyguards and companions of the king: a few high nobles and chieftains. They devote their life to war and use Shield Wall tactics and equipment similar to Celtic nobles. Like Celtic chieftains, their helmets are decorated to give immediate recognition and act as a rally flag for their own warriors. |

Heruskoz Speutagardaz (Cherusci Pikemen) In response to heavy armor and cavalry tactics of their neighbors, Germanic tribes began using well-drilled formation using over-long” lances in a dense and deadly formation, either as a defensive anchor or to push into enemy formation. However, their lack of shields means they must beware of incoming missiles.” |

Missile Units
Heruskoz Jugunthiz (Suebi Young Skirmishers) These young freemen are equipped as javelinmen and serve as skirmishers for the Germanic warbands. They fight with a bunch of light javelins, an affordable wicker shield, and a framea as a secondary weapon. |

Swebusku Sakutones (Suebi Archers) Archery is essential for survival in the forest, and Germanic tribes live by hunting, which prepares them for war as well, rather than farming and cattle breeding, which are left to slaves and servile peoples. These freemen employ an early form of longbow, which does not have the same range as later variants. |

Swebesku Stoinowerponez (Suebi Slingers) This unit represents the lowest strata of Sweboz society. They are not allowed to use a shield and spear, which are the symbols of free men in early Germanic society, because they are not full members of the tribe. Their low status is also reflected in the simple clothing they wear. |

Swebusku Dugunthiz (Suebi Veteran Skirmishers) These warriors are equally adept at melee or ranged combat with their versatile framea, of which they carry several. They are, after the framannoz, the backbone of any Germanic warband. They are comparable to Greek peltasts, because of their dual task and melee combat abilities. |

Cavalry Units
Tencteriz Jugunthiz Ridanz (Tencteri Young Riders) Germanic cavalry units historically included a light spear infantry component in their ranks. They use their supporting infantrymen to fix the enemy in place, forcing them to fight against both cavalry and spear infantry at the same time. |

Tencteriz Gaisoz Ridanz (Tencteri Spear Riders) Ridanz ride small and sometimes poor quality horses, though they are excellent light cavalry. They are useful scouts as well as skirmishers. Like many Germanic warriors, however, they can lack battle-discipline and be overeager to enter battle against worthy opponents. |

Tencteriz Thegnoz Ridanz (Tencteri Noble Riders) These Tencteri nobles are superb cavalry and capable of matching almost anything their neighbors have to offer. This is especially true when supported by fast infantry, which is how Germanic cavalry traditionally fight. |

Neitos Reforms
Heruskoz Dugunthiz (Cherusci Assault Infantry) These Cherusci warriors are among the best in their tribe, drawn from the lower ranks of the nobility and the pick of the warrior class. |

Niwjaz Herunoudozez (Late Germanic Swordsmen) The late Herunoudozez are much better equipped compared to their predecessors. Their shields are reinforced with a metal shield rim and some of these warriors have Celtic or Roman mail-shirts and helmets acquired by trade or as battlefield trophies. If necessary, it is expected that these men will give their lives for their leader. To leave a battlefield when their chief has fallen is the greatest dishonour for a Herunoudaz. |

Marhathegnoz (Germanic Noble Horse) The Germanic tribes are not known for their cavalry and their nobles fight on foot. But lately, after contact with their neighbours and the Celts, the most wealthy nobles have formed a cavalry unit, with tall, imported horses. |
