Palaemachoi Hoplitai (Massilian Veteran Hoplites) The Massalians are forced to live under constant military awareness with drills, patrols and military training due to the unstable relations with the neighbouring tribes, as well as raids and the Carthaginian threat. The Palaimachoi Hoplitai are a corps of heavy hoplites comprised of veteran and picked hoplites who are experienced from these constant conflicts, and are equipped by the Massalian state with a new type of chainmail armour of Massalian design. Cauaros (Allied Gallic Champions) Gallic champions are highly rewarded by their chieftains for their prowess, and are escorted by many servants on the battlefield. They could hardly be distinguished from the nobles, also having brillant and elaborate equipment, showing their gold torques and other jewelry. Bogiokingetoi (Allied Gallic Heavy Axemen) These heavy axemen are a professional variant of the Batoroi. They carry two javelins and a heavy axe for close combat, with which they are highly skilled. Their main task is to make the breakthrough in battle, if the peasants fail or break. Well-protected against front-line skirmishers, these axemen can punch a hole in the enemy line, allowing other troops to exploit the gap decisively. Class: 2 Size: 200

Ambaktoi (Allied Gallic Retainers) Ambaktoi, or those who march around, can be misunderstood to be bodyguards or companions in arms, but they are truly servant-warriors, enjoying a much better way of life than simple slaves. These war servants closely follow their master in any battle, protect him, and give him their own weapon if his is broken or damaged, and in the cavalry, provide him a new horse. Their equipment is good, reflecting the wealth of their master, although not as good as the equipment of the Solduroi. Class: 2 Size: 300

Acuadrettoi (Allied Gallic Youths) These young warriors are trained as skirmishers. They are lightly equipped with wicker shields or small bucklers and several long-range javelins. Neitotoi (Arevaci Neitos Skirmishers) The Neitotoi are composed of the best and strongest Celtiberian freemen, clad in light everyday garments for maximum agility. Keltohellenikoi Pezoi (Celto-Hellenic Infantry) These shock infantry are Celto-Hellenic ‘men-at-arms,’ Celtic warriors of a mixed culture. While they are not of especially great station, they are capable warriors fighting in the Celtic manner, in a motley combination of Hellenic and Celtic gear and dress: long Celtic shields, a Greek helmet, a Celtic sword, and javelins. They soften up an opponent with their javelins and charge an enemy once they’re weakened with the great force of Celtic warriors. Class: 3 Size: 200

Thorax Reforms

Romaiko Summakhiko Peziko (Romanised Infantry) Massalia has traditionally been a Roman ally. Due to the conflict with Carthage for the supremacy in the Western and Northern Mediterranean, but especially due to the increasing power of the Celtic tribes in Gaul, the Roman army has aided the Massalian army many times with its infantry which, through discipline and tactics, is able to withstand the Celtic threat. Ephippoi Thorakitai (Massilian Heavy Cavalry) The use of cavalry in the Massalian army is a necessity. The Celts are able to field a very capable cavalry, frequently leading incursions into Massalian territory. Cavalry of their own is a necessary response until the rest of the Massalian army can be mobilised.
