Kombrogoi (Caledonian Light Spearmen) Common throughout Britain, spear-armed militias are composed of freemen who have been called to defend settlements and bolster armies. Given some brief instruction, a long spear, a javelin, and a shield, these fast infantry are particularly useful for supporting cavalry or responding to a sudden emergency anywhere on the battlefield.

Akrowiri Kaledonakoi (Caledonian Chosen Spearmen) These warriors form a strong, professional force of excellent troops. The chief’s men are normally armed to the teeth, with the best equipment: full mail, spears, and strong shields.

Lorgowiri (Caledonian Clubmen) These are the very poorest of the freemen. A small, but maneuverable shield, and a stout cudgel comprises the entirety of their battle equipment. Despite this poor equipment, if they can achieve surprise and get a solid charge, they may be able to turn the tide of battle.

Teceitos (Britannic Axemen) These warriors wear leather or padded vests and bronze or iron helmets to help protect themselves. Their strength lies in the stout axes which they wield with fierce determination as they attempt to hew their way through enemy battle lines. They are light enough to move swiftly over the battlefield, allowing them to flank heavy infantry, and strike them from the flanks or rear. If they use their javelins at the right time, the Teceitos are especially useful for breaking up heavy infantry.

Corio Runo (Britannic Hidden Warriors) These warriors rely on pure aggression and their sharp spears to carry the day. With little or no armour, they are best employed in an ambush situation, where they can assail the enemy with a sudden javelin barrage and powerful thrusts from their spears.

Ouxseloi Kaledonakoi (Caledonian Noble Spearmen) These Caledonian Nobles are superbly equipped and immensely brave warriors. A truly elite force of full-time fighters, whose place and standing in the community depends completely on their prowess in battle, they prefer to fight in an open formation where they can demonstrate their courage.

Kladiwoi (Caledonian Retainer Swordsmen) These warriors are armed with short swords, light armor, and small shields. They are best used when they can strike the enemy with a well-timed volley of javelins before charging into their disorganized ranks.

Kluddargos (Britannic Sword Masters) These nobles use two-handed longswords with especially heavy blades. Such weapons are very expensive and require years of practice to master. As nobles, they can also afford excellent mail armour, but their lack of shields may make them vulnerable to enemy missiles.

Cwmyr (Caledonian Noble Swordsmen) These nobles carry shortswords and wear good quality leather armour that remains flexible and allows them to move freely and make use of their shields and swords. Their considerable skill at arms inspires their comrades in battle, and their bravery is noteworthy.

Drwdae Ambaktoi (Britannic Guard Spearmen) Druids do not usually fight, but since they are incredibly important to the tribe, many brave men of high birth flock to the tribe’s shrines and temples in order to protect them. Their excellent armor and good shields enable them to be very aggressive with their sharp spears.

Arkwioi (Caledonian Archers) These freemen are skilled hunters, but have little experience in the ways of war. While unarmoured and equipped with weaponry better suited to their trade, when called upon to engage the enemy in close quarters or in a skirmish, these men are capable of fighting with a determination that belies their lack of formal training.

Balroae (Caledonian Slingers) These freemen are drawn from the poor and lonely shepherds of the Highland hills and vales. Unlike more skilled slingers elsewhere, who employ carefully chosen stones or lead sling bullets, these men use whatever rocks they can find. Thus, while their range and accuracy are poor, they can produce a steady volume of fire throughout the fight.

Markakoi Gaisowiri (Caledonian Light Cavalry) These warriors form a light cavalry unit which is accustomed to raiding and skirmishing. Since they are lightly equipped with small shields, javelins, and spears, this unit can run rings around an opponent and chase down skirmishers with ease.

Markakoi Trummoi (Caledonian Medium Cavalry) These nobles are among the few Caledonians able to afford horses. While their rocky and mountainous land is poor land for raising horses, the Caledonians do raise them, because they are a sign of prestige and provide a definite advantage in battle, particularly on extended raids into the rich farmlands of the south.

Albio Uassedoi (Late Britannic Slinger Spearmen) These veteran freemen are superb slingers and respectable spearmen. This combination gives them a certain degree of versatility, enabling them to shower their opponents with slingstones, yet also hold their ground against lighter foes in melee.

Albio Weidelos (Late Britannic Irish Raiders) Drawn from the experienced raiders of the Irish coast, these skirmishers are generally more experienced and better equipped than most of the other freemen. While they also carry shortswords for close fighting, they rely primarily on their gaiso throwing spears, which they employ with great skill.
