Skythioi Doryphoroi (Scythian Spearmen) Scythian spearmen are raised from settled groups of formerly nomadic people. As they abandon their traditional way of life as nomadic herdsmen, more and more of their warriors become infantry. The equipment of these troops reflects substantial Greek influence, which is quite evident in, for example, the large oval thureos shields that these infantrymen carry.

Skuda Fistaeg Fat Aexsdzhytae (Scythian Foot Archers) These archers are not well outfitted for hand to hand combat, as all they carry is a short sword or small pickaxe, and no armour but their thick jackets and bashlyk felt caps. If unsupported, they will be easy prey for cavalry or aggressive infantry who are fast enough to catch them.

Skythioi Akinakephoroi (Scythian Skirmishers) Light Scythian infantrymen are rarely seen, used only as a last emergency resource, as Scythian settlements are very rarely attacked directly. The war is usually far away, as cavalry is the main tool of nomadic warfare.

Skythioi Epilektoi Toxotai (Scythian Armoured Archers) Less common than their mounted equivalents, these heavy Scythian archers dismount to operate in woods and rough terrain. They are very well protected with a light and flexible Greek linothorax, complete with bronze or bone scales. They wield sagaris axes, but the wealthiest also use longswords.

Thrakioi Peltastai (Thracian Peltasts) The bread and butter of successors’ auxiliaries, peltasts are equipped with a thureos shield, light helmet, and for the most wealthy, greaves. These are regular units, unlike most troops who fulfill this role: still largely Thracian and Bithynian mercenaries.

Bosphoroi Epilektoi Hippeis (Bosporan Noble Cavalry) The Bosporan kingdom, due to its position, has to face many nomadic raids, so it has adopted many elements from nomadic warfare, including the emphasis on cavalry. These elite horsemen are the strongest assets of the kingdom. They form the general’s bodyguard on every campaign, but sometimes they accompany the king himself as well.

Skythioi Xystophoroi (Scythian Lancers) The threat of nomads is always looming, and so many enemies are turned to allies. Lances and medium armour allow these men to combat the horse archers and heavy cavalry of their nomadic neighbours.

Skuda Baexdzhyntae (Scythian Light Horsemen) These light riders are from the Scythian tribes to the north of the Pontus Euxinus (Black Sea). They rely on a long sword, bow and shield (typically, the crescent shaped, leather faced, taka shield of the Scythian peoples) and are some of the most effective light horse available. These light horsemen will prove of little value in a hand to hand clash against disciplined infantry and care should be taken not to waste them in such a way.

Skythioi Hippakontistai (Scythian Young Horsemen) Young Scythian horsemen are not all able to practice the difficult art of mounted archery. When needed, they can act as raiding cavalry with javelins as well, like their neighbouring tribes.

Skythioi Kontophoroi Hippotoxotai (Scythian Heavy Horse Archers) These armoured horse archers fight with a versatile panoply: the bow, a battleaxe, and a kontos lance. For the most part, they wear flexible Greek-style leather armour, with scales made from iron, bronze, or more commonly bone or horn, which is easier to collect and shape.

Skythioi Aristoi Hippotoxotai (Scythian Noble Horse Archers) The Scythian nobles are superb horsemen, with finely crafted bronze and even gold scale armour, their equipment highly and sumptuously decorated with golden animals. They wear a Greek-style scaled linothorax, a small crescent or rectangular shield made with iron lamellar plates, greaves, and Greek helmets.

Skuda Uaezdaettae (Scythian Noble Cavalry) The Skuda Uaezdaettae, or Scythian nobles, fight in a manner almost more similar to the Greeks than their nomadic ancestors, preferring the xyston or spear to archery. Equipped with a fine linothorax reinforced with metal scales, long pteryges, and a Greek-style bronze helmet, they are still a deadly cavalry force, though not to the extent they once were.
